Housecleaning Workout Tip: Sweep the Floor
By Cindy Posey | November 8, 2007
It’s time to liven up the sweeping routine. I was in a step class the other day and the instructor threw in a creative interval training step, in-line skating. Have you seen how the in-line skaters push from one foot to the other? Don’t worry, I’m not going to have you strike a pose with your head down and back parallel to the floor. I thought that we could sweep the floor and add the pushing momentum of the legs as we go around the kitchen, dining room or bathroom floors. If you have hardwood throughout your home, then you can create a full aerobic routine just by sweeping your floors. Here are two suggestions for incorporating “in-line skating” to your dull sweeping routines:
- As you’re sweeping the floor, shift your weight from one foot to the other. As you move around the kitchen, it will appear almost like a hop by placing all your weight on one foot and with forward momentum, shift to the other.
- Glide across the floor with broom in hand by adding a bit of a bounce to your shifting steps. This is a bit more challenging, but you’ll also be able to add a small explosive side step to the routine.
Yes, I did try this at home and it was fun. I found myself sweeping the floor a bit faster and threw in a couple of squats as I removed the dirt and grime from the floors. Alright, now Go Workout Mom!

This was a very interesting post as I always though cleaning was hard enough but it is something I usually don’t do. Keep it up though as I am loving your post and your passion towards a healthier life.
Thank you. I don’t like cleaning either. I try to throw something in to make it a bit more fun.
