Week 4: Nashville Zoo 5K Run, Jan 20-26

By Cindy Posey | January 29, 2008

I took it easy this week in preparation for the 5K run on Sunday. In retrospect, I took it too easy. The weather finally turned to winter for us. The temperature dropped into the teens midweek for a couple of days. Yes, I know there are many of you wading through snow. I’m a southern girl and a whimp. I only go out when I truly have to in anything less than 30 degree weather! We spent most of the week indoors.

Sunday: Rest and games with the family.

Monday: I completed a Fit Yummy Mummy Interval Training Workout. I like her combinations of exercises. I replaced one move with the Squat Kicks Workout Mommy brought up in her Monday Move It post. This routine served as a combination cardio and strength training routine. From warm-up to cool down, it took 45 minutes.

Tuesday: The day got away from me and I didn’t workout.

Wednesday: I completed a two mile run around my neigborhood. The hills are bothering me less and less.

Thursday: Nothing.

Friday: For my sixty minute cross training workout, I completed a Yoga Video at home. It was nice and relaxing. I felt limber and ready for race day.

Saturday: I love race day! Most of the morning was spent laying back and relaxing. Ryan’s dad offered to watch the little ones which turned out to be fantastic, because there was no wandering through the Zoo while the race was underway. Ryan was my cheerleader. We’re members of the Zoo, but I had not seen much of the land in the first half of the race. It was exciting to see some of the feeding areas and potential for future growth. The mix of off road gravel patches and mulchy areas made for a well rounded run. Every couple of kilometers they had speakers set up and music blasting! For running the zoo, the only animals I saw were the horses in the stable. Ryan said the Zebras were pretty entertaining to watch because they kept trying to figure out where to run. With all these people running by them, they were the most active he’d ever seen them.

My final time was 27:19 which was a six minute improvement over the I Run for the Party 5K in September. Spending the time prior to the run with fellow moms and after the run were the highlights of the afternoon. After talking about the kiddos, we began to discuss music, politics and real estate. As an extra plus, beer was served with the meal! A local brewery, Blackstone provided the complementary drinks! If I ever decide to get truly competitive for times, then I might have to forgo the drinking privileges, but right now, this is for fun and a couple of beers were a great way to cap a fun evening!

Nutritionally, I was not focused this week. I did not track my food group intake and could tell the difference by the end of the week. I ate less vegetables. My water consumption went down. In the overall picture of fitness and health, food is my biggest weakness. I have areas to improve upon in exercise, but it’s now time for me to revamp my eating habits. I know what I need to do, now it’s time for me to dig deep and find the motivation to make the small changes that will clean up my diet!

That’s some great improvement! This Spring you’ll be able to make even more gains over last year’s time.

As for the post-race beer, I know quite a few tee totalers that are faster than me, but the vast majority of runners that I know tend to enjoy a little post-race imbibing. I wouldn’t let it worry you!

Wowwee Wow Wow on your 5K time! I’m walking my first 5K this Saturday, but my time’s are horrible! At least my first race will be my PW. Maybe I can only improve from there.
